PATTERN RECOGNITION by Vladimir Kartashov

29 March 2019

We would be delighted to see you at the solo exhibition PATTERN RECOGNITION by Vladimir Kartashov on April 4 at 7 pm.

Vladimir Kartashov explores the game space where he spends most of his life – creates copies of the virtual world and integrates these with the routine daily life. By combining traditions of Mexican Muralism and New Leipzig School, Vladimir develops patterns of the brand-new style – Cyber Baroque. Glitch-like effects on traditional hosts, idealized fantasy characters, angle shifts as if caused by ‘lags’ – these and many other techniques enable Vladimir to shatter traditional ideas of perspective and explore the versatility of the brand-new user-generated reality. Will humans disappear altogether? Will they only live as body-less artificial intelligence? Or will we go back to the post-Apocalyptic ‘Mad Max’ version of Materialism? These are questions Vladimir gives numerous possible answers to.

In his new project PATTERN RECOGNITION, Vladimir contrasts automatic logic present in Artificial Intelligence (training in recognition and categorization) and random mythical/metaphysical phenomena (‘supernatural,’ unexplainable, based purely on intuition).

Our upbringing, surroundings and education define certain images and how we recognize them, and only reactionary disruption of patterns shows what our personal attitude is and what is ‘superficial.’ People’s decisions come from personal characteristics, moods, intuition, ‘ifs’, ‘buts’ and context. Weapons can be used for murder or interior design. Graphic arts can be a perfect ideal or a horrifying curio. Amazing placebo effect. Random error. Computers will not understand these modulations. Only humans can.
